Nobody in this basin needs to be told it's hot. You've been living inside the same August week the rest of us have, the one where the ice chest quit being a solution somewhere around Tuesday, the dog won't walk past the end of the driveway, and every plan you make falls apart the second you open the front door.

Here's one that won't. Up the hill in Pioneertown, behind a long wooden porch on Mane Street, there's a room with six wood lanes, a pool table, and air conditioning that works. Pioneer Bowl opens at six-thirty on Friday and Saturday nights, which in August is exactly when you want it. Summer nights in Pioneertown are unmatched, with starry nights and balmy temps. Quiet, with a side of bowling and cold beer.

Six Lanes and a Pool Table

The lanes are wood, laid down back when Pioneertown itself was still going up, and Roy Rogers rolled the first ball down them. That's not a plaque on a wall. That's the floor you're standing on.

The room has never been renovated into somewhere else, which is the point of it. The ball returns run above ground, so the machinery is right there at eye level doing its work in front of you instead of humming away under the floor. There's a pool table to play while you wait your turn at a lane. There's a Budweiser at the bar. And pizza if you show up on the right night.

What It Costs and How You Get In

You reserve online. Ten dollars holds one lane for fifty-five minutes for up to six people, and it's non-refundable, so pick your night and mean it. Bowling runs separately at twenty-five dollars a person per game. Shoes are five. Socks, if you forgot them, are two.

One rule before anybody loads the car: bowlers have to be fifteen or older. No bumpers, no kids' setup, nothing in the room built for a six-year-old's birthday. Fifteen and up is the whole guest list, and knowing that now saves somebody a drive and a hard conversation in the parking lot.

Don't point the car up there at noon, either — the doors don't open at noon any day of the week. Posted hours are Friday and Saturday, six-thirty to eleven-thirty, with Thursday by appointment, and those hours move with the season and the week. A look at the site or a phone call costs you nothing. A locked door costs you the night.
