A new community philosophy series comes to the high desert. The Joshua Tree Philosophy Symposium gathers neighbors and visitors at Beatnik Lounge for clear-eyed conversation on big ideas—ethics, meaning, logic, and the questions that won’t sit still.

Launched by Lawrence Udell Fike, Jr. (philosophy instructor at El Camino College, Fullerton College, and Long Beach City College), the symposium opens Saturday, December 6, at Beatnik Lounge, with monthly meetings planned on First Fridays thereafter. Compound YV in Yucca Valley hosts a solo exhibition by Joshua Tree–based sculptor and toy designer Coco Hall. "The Heart is an Organ of Fire" gathers more than a decade of work responding to the slow demise of nature, especially through wildfire and human-made disaster—a subject that feels close to home in the high desert. Hall builds her sculptures from soft, tactile materials like faux fur, velvet, and organza, transforming everyday objects of risk and ruin into uncanny, approachable forms. Faux fur gas cans, a mischievous pair of "pants on fire" titled "Triple Wildfire," plush candelabras, ceramic burning houses, and life-sized caryatids turn the gallery into a landscape where humor and grief share the same terrain. Known locally for her toy designs and animal-rights–minded imagery, Hall uses bright color and playful surfaces to pull viewers in, then asks them to sit with the realities of fire, extraction, and environmental loss.
