Desert Institute instructor Stephen Fredericks leads a four-hour family field experience through the talus caves near Hidden Valley Nature Trail in Joshua Tree National Park. The group meets Sunday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The route covers less than two miles, with uneven ground, narrow passages, tight spaces and moderate-to-strenuous scrambling.
The program is for adults and youth ages 8 and older who are comfortable scrambling. Participants younger than 12 must come with an adult. Bring water, food, hiking clothes and closed-toe shoes. Transportation isn't included, and park admission is separate. Tickets are $40, plus a $2.85 fee.
